Defender Academy

The OT Defender Academy is a year-round elite development program designed to create the most complete and dominant defenders in the game. Led by Trey Whitty—one of the premier defensive minds in lacrosse with 20+ years of experience—this academy trains defenders who go on to thrive at every level, from top college programs to the professional ranks.

Our focus goes well beyond traditional defensive methods—we build tough, smart, and skilled athletes who understand how to shut down offensive players, defend as a team, and get the ball back. This program combines training methods to develop physical fitness, footwork, toughness, playmaking ability, stickwork, IQ, communication, and dominance!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why join the Defender Academy?

Trey Whitty has developed the most elite defenders over the past 20 years at the youth and high school levels, with players matriculating to the highest levels of college lacrosse, and the professional ranks. This program takes all of this knowledge into a year long program to develop the best defensive players in the game. Trey brings a unique mindset to the defensive game, and brings this blend of stout 1v1 D, playmaking ability, communication, and IQ to the position.

Do I attend all sessions?

We hope that our defenders will take advantage of all training opportunities, but understand that conflicts arise throughout the year. For this reason, we have created a flexible schedule that includes weekly group training as well as an Open session for make-ups, or for those wanting extra work.

What does a typical training session look like?

Each session will be one hour in length, with a fast paced intense approach. All training sessions begin with 10-15 minutes of physical warm-up and training - jump rope, ladders, cones, physicality, etc.. This will be followed by three periods of work that come from Trey's vast database of drill work, centered around footwork, physical engagement, stickwork, playmaking, communication, off ball positioning and stance, and IQ.

What are the spring season live game evaluations?

Coach Whitty will come to 2 games throughout the spring season to evaluate the player, and provide feedback on strengths, areas of improvement, and overall areas of focus. This will then be implemented into training sessions for the player.

What are Open Sessions?

These are training opportunities to be used as make-ups or added work for the athletes. These may be mixed with other groups, but add flexibility for the schedule of our athletes.

Are payment plans available?

Yes, you have the option at registration to pay in full or choose to pay in four installments throughout the year.

Are drop-ins allowed at Defender Academy sessions?

If we have space in the cohort, drop-ins will be allowed at a cost of $85/session. Players will need to contact Coach Whitty beforehand for details and to confirm attendance.
